The Power of Glass Doors

Over the years and through the homes we have created, it has become clear how important the selection of external doors (and windows) are in creating ambience and the overall feel of a home. Whether it is to allow natural light to flood into your space, or to honour the beautiful garden views outside, the addition of glass door styles has slowly become one of the most adopted architectural features in western homes.

By design, glass doors allow in an abundance of natural light and in turn have been proven to enhance your general wellbeing and mood, as well as your direct connection to nature. Aside from natural Vitamin D, ventilation for your home is improved and the natural light regulates your body’s circadian rhythm to better your sleep, cognitive power and general health.

Beyond their aesthetic, their place in the homes we have designed intrinsically links back to Japanese architecture and design principles, that were founded in ancient times. Demonstrated by the ceiling sliding doors (shoji) found in homes across the country; paper screens allow in trickles of light and slide to unveil views of gardens throughout the seasons, framed by the door structure.

While Crittall-style (or French) doors and windows (see images above and below) emanate a style more closely resembling traditional Japanese sliding doors, seamless glass panelled doors that allow an even smoother transition from outside to indoors.

Within our work, it is our aim to create spaces the reflect the outside in; breathing life into homes and blurring the boundaries between nature and interior spaces. By integrating glass doors into your home, you can be uplifted by the natural beauty outside, and maybe even have a better incentive to look after your garden.

As shared in our recent Instagram post, an example of the dramatic effect glass doors can have on a home can be seen in our ‘Elegant Family Abode’ project in Wandsworth. Demonstrated via the images below, we replaced the original, bulky timber patio doors with seamless bi-folding glass doors to brighten up the room, open up the communal family space to the garden and breathe new life into the home.
