In nearly every project we take on, a window seat has become a must-have feature, just as much as a home office. As homes increasingly serve multiple functions in the post-Covid world, carving out a peaceful retreat that isn’t the dining table or workspace has become essential. A well-designed window seat offers that quiet corner where you can curl up with a book, savor a coffee, or simply drift off.
Here’s how to create a window seat that’s as inviting as it is practical:
1. Choose the Perfect Window
It starts with observing how natural light moves through your home. The window doesn’t have to be south-facing or exceptionally large. In most London homes, windows are limited to the front and back of the house, so the key is finding a spot that suits your routine and the room’s layout.
For our Barks & Bliss project, we nestled the window seat in a quiet corner overlooking the garden. Though it’s part of a larger open-plan space, it feels distinct, offering a cosy sanctuary away from the main kitchen and dining areas. It’s a favorite spot for our client—and their dogs—to unwind.
2. Built-in vs. Freestanding
While a bespoke built-in window seat may be the dream, it isn’t always necessary. It can be costly, and not every space benefits from custom joinery. A well-placed daybed or armchair can be just as charming. Add a side table and a lamp to create the foundation, then layer in throws, cushions, and a textured rug to make it irresistibly inviting.
In our Jewel Box Suite project, our client chose a rattan chair placed in front of a large window overlooking her garden. It’s a simple setup that exudes charm and comfort.
3. Carefully Curate the Lighting
Lighting is key to creating the right atmosphere. Choose a lamp tall enough to cast a warm glow from above, steering clear of harsh overhead lights. A good lampshade can help diffuse the light, making the space feel even cosier.
In our Culinary-Inspired Home, we used a wall light positioned just above the seating area, casting a gentle, ambient light that invites relaxation.
4. Don’t Skimp on Comfort
The heart of any window seat is comfort. If your choice isn’t upholstered, consider adding a plush seat cushion to make the space extra inviting. In our Barks & Bliss project, we designed a window seat in the master bedroom, making it so irresistibly cosy that it’s become a hard place to leave.
5. Construction
- We review alternative/ suggested products by the project contractor against performance and environmental standards.
- At handover, we provide comprehensive records, technical specifications, and maintenance guides to ensure your home’s sustainability is maintained long-term.
When we revisit projects a few months after completion, our clients often share that their window seat has become their favorite nook in the house. It’s one of our favorite elements to design because it contributes so profoundly to well-being. If you’d like more tips or a peek behind the scenes, sign up for our newsletter below.
